What is your app's social rhythm?

by Gary O'Keeffe

This post will be especially useful if you are looking to:

  • Time app updates/releases to coincide with lulls in social media chatter
  • Time the launch of a marketing campaign to maximize social media network effects
  • Forecast customer support demand

Each app has its own social rhythm. Some apps experience high volumes of social chatter during weekends, while experiencing low volumes of social chatter during weekdays. Other apps are the complete opposite.

Appsedia's "Time of Daily Activity" heatmap highlights the times of the day (and the days of the week) when people are most likely to post an online comment about an app. In this heatmap (see below), every time has a shade of purple; the darker a time's shade of purple, the more popular that time is for people to post about that app.

Figure 1: Appsedia's "Time of Daily Activity" heatmap for Clash of Clans during the month of May in 2021.

The plot above demonstrates Clash of Clan's social rhythm. Notice how this plot is lighter between 1pm and 5pm—this means that people are much less likely to talk about Clash of Clans during those hours. We call this type of social rhythm a daily social cycle (since it repeats daily) and this type of pattern is not uncommon in the mobile app industry. Meanwhile, we also see how Saturday and Sunday appear slightly darker than the other days of the week—it appears as though people are more likely to post about Clash of Clans during the weekends—this type of social rhythm repeats weekly and so we call it a weekly social cycle. All-in-all, people are most likely to talk about Clash of Clans at the weekends outside of 1PM-5PM, and people are least likely to talk about Clash of Clans during the weekdays between 1PM and 5PM.
